Hi

This will most likely be my final post for the year as I am about to start my exams and most of my time will be devoted to studying 24/7 unfortunately. The last week of Internet Studies has been very intense, the final project draft was completed in the last tutorial and hopefully I can have my final project completed exactly how I want it by the 8th of November. The news article was successfully completed and handed in and with a few tweeks it should be ready to be marked by tomorrow.

This week is the big and dreaded semeseter test on all 15 required readings done this year, however I am making very good progress in my preparation so hopefully the test goes well for me. Lectures in the last week have been focused on various sections but most notably there was a revision on the quiz on friday which was particularly useful.

On a personal note, my weekend was very enjoyable as it was my brothers wedding on saturday and that went very well and I am very happy for him:)

Thank you to all those who have been regularly checking in to see my blog and hopefully the perspective of a psychology student studying internet studies has been entertaining.

Hey, its a new week and their is a lot of exciting things coming up this week. Firstly, the weekend wasn't as enjoyable as it should have been for me as I was sick the entire weekend but I seem to have recovered a little now and am ready to complete newspaper article 2!

The second newspaper article that needs to be done is based off interviews that my group of myself, Pooja and Yuvi have conducted so hopefully we can get a newspaper level quality article completed.


Its 8am on monday morning right now and our group is about to kick off to complete the article, will keep you all posted on what happens.

Hi

The second article for the course has been revealed and our group is busy sorting out a questionairre that is needed for the assignment. My group (myself, Pooja and Yuvritha) are going to interview 6 people in the fields of politics, journalism and history and ask the various people on there thoughts on the protection of infomation bill that is being currently proposed.

I will add a copy of the questionnaire was it is completed and create a opinion poll on some of the questions to see how it is that the viewing public views are contrasted by those who were asked the questionnaire.

 Hi, this post is coming after a long break following the mid semester holiday. Work seems to be getting more and more chaotic as the semester draws to a conclusion, but I will continue to add new posts whenever I have the time available.

The last few weeks in internet studies tutorials have been dedicated to finishing off our first newspaper article, this is was finally completed as per instruction and the end result looks very good in my opinion so please check it out by clicking on the link below:)

Lectures have been very interesting during the last few weeks with some interesting content being lectured as well as a very intriguing movie being viewed.

I have just started preparations for the final exams now and I hope that I can be ready in time:) will do another post after the tutorial this week.

This week was dedicated to the submission of our group's first newspaper article. My group, comprising of myself, Pooja Maharaj and Yuvetha Sewlall managed to post our article onto the Newsportal website. Our article was on the censorship issues in China with regards to Google.

The previous week has been very disruptive with strikes on campus which has made it difficult for our group to co-ordinate our efforts into our article, however the end result is really good.

Hey,

The last few weeks has been very interesting. My newsgroup has begun to work on our news topic which is Google and its ongoing debate and negotiations with the Chinese government over the right to be allowed to be available to the public. We have also begun to create a zotero reference library for our group. Internet studies lectures are focusing on the history and development of the world news media and there are many interesting new aspects of the development of the news media that we are tapping into every lecture.

This week my group will begin to create a rough draft for our first newspaper article, which is very exciting. Hopefully I will be able to update the progress of the report during the week:)

Hi,

This post is just to give a brief view of my week with regards to my Internet Studies course. During this weeks tutorial, learnt some interesting new ways in which Zotero can be used to make a group library of references and our term newspaper was also discussed. Our tutorial group is going to be focusing on Government Intervention in the control of data by networks, with particular interest to Facebook and Blackberry phones as well as local and international related problems.

I volunteered to be the editor for the newspaper for my tutorial group which hopefully will be enjoyable and I look forward to doing that:)

Otherwise the week progressed pretty solidly and will make another post to let everyone reading this know what is happening in the life of a psychology student:)

What does freedom of expression mean to me?

Hi, my name is Irshaad Bramdev. I live in Westville which is a suburb just outside of Durban, for those outside of South Africa who are viewing this, Durban is on the east coast of SA in the province of KZN. I am a BSocSc Pyschology first year student currently studying at UKZN, I hope to be able to graduate and hopefully get my honours in child psychology by 2014.

The main source of infomation and news that I get in my life is through the internet and television. I regularly watch the SABC and eNews channels to stay in touch with both global and local news, I also look at online media such as google news. My family, in particularly my dad, is a avid newspaper reader and I often get the news from him before I hear of it on the television or internet. I can only speak one language fluently, English is my home language and language that I have used throughout my schooling career, I can speak and write in Afrikaans, but my vocabulary is very limited. This language block has limited the amount of sources that I can access, however in South Africa, the ability to speak only english has been sufficient to allow me to communicate with people from all walks of life and has not in any way hindered my ability to forge meaningful relationships with people from many different cultural backgrounds. In relation to news, I tend to focus primarily on politics, financial and sporting aspects of the news (especially football, I am a "die-hard" Liverpool fan).

I enjoy reading, however I tend to favour novels and fictional books over the non-fictional autobiographies. My recreational TV shows that I watch are usually the light hearted comedies and sitcoms, I am not a big fan of soapies, dramas and horror shows.


The freedom of the press is, I believe, essential to any liberal democracy. The press form both a check on the executive body of the state as well as providing the public with the information of what is happening in their areas. In essence the press provides accountability for the government, however this is only effective if the press remain independent of the governments and if the press have the freedom to discuss any material which they wish to. Limitations to the press is a form of "legal corruption" in my opinion. Limitations that are enforced by the governments onto the press will allow the governments to behave as they feel fit without the worry that they will be exposed and help accountable for any shortcomings that happen as a result of what they have done or plan on doing.

The cartoon is a good representation of the career paths that I have chosen, with the main aim of my studies at psychology however there is a major influence through the internet and technology in my current career path.
